1. I re-sealed a family time capsule in 2000 that I intend to open on my 50th birthday and then re-seal and open again on my 60th. Birthday. I’ll probably add my FB page before I reseal it.

2. I’ve been to the top of the Sears Tower, Empire State Building, and Petronas Towers (Malaysia) — but I’m afraid of heights.

3. I have quite a collection of autographs and more than 100 Frisbees

4. I have a family photo album for each year from 1982 to 2010

5. My first job working in Colorado Springs was stocking toys for Target at Christmas

6. I’ve kissed the Blarney Stone in Ireland

7. I proposed to my wife by asking her: “If I were to ask you to marry me what would you say?”

8. Two books I wish they would make into movies are: “Meanwhile Back at the Castle” and “Replay”

9. I live in Colorado but I have a very low tolerance for cold. I would prefer it be 10 degrees too hot than it to be 2 degrees too cold

10. I love football and the Denver Broncos, but I didn’t watch, play or see a football game until I was 22 years old.

11. I wish I still had my ’71 Camaro – but I’m happy to have a 40th Edition Mustang

12. I’ve never played a hole of golf

13. My best friend was accidently killed in a farm accident when I was in fifth grade.

14. My 8th grade class had 9 students. We shared a classroom and teacher with the 8 students in the 7th grade class – including my brother.

15. I was one of the first users of TiVo and NetFlix. TiVo used my employeer’s hard drives and managers from that same company left to join NetFlix – which is how I heard about both companies so early.

16. I was the yearbook photographer for my High School and still have all the negatives from the photos that I took – including many that never made the yearbook

17. I’ve caught two baseballs in batting practice at Major League baseball games. One a Coors field and the second one at Wrigley field.

18. I “smuggled” gum into Singapore and then chewed gum while going through the immigration line. Why? I was bringing gum from the USA to a friend who lives in Hong Kong and she was unable to find that specific brand in HK.

19. I wrote down the recipe to Pizza Hut’s Thin ‘N Crispy and the old Thick ‘N Chewy pizza recipes when I worked there in the ‘70’s

20. There are 3 songs that have had special meaning to me in my life and have touched my heart:

Praise the Lord – Imperials

Awesome God

Shout to the Lord

Still no discussion on this from anybody!

I don’t know if water related family reunions are acceptable or if there are those that wouldn’t feel comfortable around water, but I just found out that beautiful Lake Cumberland, Kentucky is one of the premiere houseboating vacation spots.

The thought here is to throw out the idea of a multi-family houseboat Reunion/vacation.

Imagine: 1,200 miles of shoreline, astounding waterfall and countless secret coves awaiting you, time melts away. You and your friends and family can spend the day cruising, skiing, fishing or just living the good life onboard a custom houseboat.

What would excite you about a multi-family Reunion/Vacation? What would be a barrier or not excite you about doing this? Help me put together a list of the must-have’s and must-not haves for something like this.

I’ve not had any comments to my thoughts on a Multi-Family Reunion. I’m not sure if that means no one is reading any of this or what. But, I’ve had some more thoughts about this.

First, I think if something like this is going to happen, then it might make sense to create a website using something like MyEvent.com to help communicate the event and to get everyone’s thoughts on what might work best.

Second, after talking with Carol, I think that if we were going to do something like this that we would start planning in November or December of this year for an event in 2011. That would give everyone more than 1 year to plan for the event.

Finally, we’ve got to come up with an event that everyone is at least willing to try — but at the same time allows people to spend time together. That means that a trip to Disney World or something similar might not work because it would be difficult for a large group to be able to spend much time together.

Here are my initial thoughts, but I’m continuing to think this through

Beach Vacation – renting a bunch of rooms that has a common place to spend time

Camping Vacation – Yellowstone or something similar with a common place to spend time

RV/Camping Vacation — Everyone trucking together on a tour of the some place in the US

Hawaii Vacatoin — similar to a beach vacation

Cruise Vacation

I’m trying to put together the pro’s and con’s of each. The biggest problem with the beach vacations might be in the spending of time togeter and possibly the lack of things to do that would keep everyone interested. The Hawaii vacation suffers a similar problem and would probably be very expensive. But, I haven’t ruled anything out as a possiblity.

Still want your thoughts.

For quite some time now, I’ve been thinking of what it would take to plan and execute the perfect multi-family reunion. By multi-family, I mean bringing together everyone that is related to me by marriage or otherwise and then opening it up for everyone else to invite their families and friends as well.

Our family has celebrated various get togethers over the years and I think most of us would agree that the bigger the event and the bigger the group of people the more memoriable and more enjoyable it has been.

So, why can’t we do this more often or at least on a fairly regular basis.

Does it take someone like my sister-in-law Alice, whom everyone loves, to be a part of the organization and planning team or does it take everyone being flexible and willing to be a part of an event that they might not have chosen on their own, but are willing to try something new in order to be part of the event, make memories and spend time together?

Or do you have to plan these things so far out in advance in order to get people to participate?

I don’t know the answer to anyof these questions. But I do want to make something like this happen even if only a fraction of the people attend.

So…

I bought a book called:

A Family Affair: How to Plan and Direct the Best Family Reunion Ever

I’m going to spend a little time reading this book and then I’m going to call my sister in law, get some names and addresses — probably do a survey to find out what we might be able to do and then see what happens.

I welcome your thoughts, ideas and comments on this. In fact, I even welcome anonymous thoughts and comments — if you’d like.

A couple of years ago, I made my “fortune” selling Raymer style poker sunglasses on eBay. Since then, I’ve been looking for the next item that I can sell that has a similar demand and has a decent margin to make it worth the effort.

A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled on what may be that next item. In case you don’t recognize it, it’s the money you could have saved by switching to Geico from the new Geico commercials.

I’m really not sure how I got the idea or what made me decide to look and see if anyone else was selling this item on eBay. But through some trial and error and with a couple of hours of work, I was able to come up with a design that I should be able to repeat and make for sale on eBay.

As you’ll see, I’m selling this with Poker players in mind, but I think it’s cute enough for just about anyone. Let me know what you think of my new item for sale.

Carol and I were out to dinner on Saturday, March 21 when we noticed a guy sitting at a table nearby that Carol thought looked a bit like me. On our way out of the restaurant we stopped by the table to say “Hi” and we (Mike and I) had a laugh about whether or not there was any resemblance and then I gave him my business card.

Yesterday he called and we thought we would get acquainted. As it turns out, we are nearly the same age and he was also born in Illinois. He’s a java programmer and works for the department of homeland security.

Interestingly enough, this bumping into my look-alike has happened before. In 1991 while I was visiting a friend in California, a guy kept yelling at me as though he knew me. When I got a little closer, he appologized and told me that I had to meet his brother because he had mistaken me for him.

Initially, I didn’t think there was much resemblance, but after I looked at the photo, I could see “just a little” bit as to why this guy had mistaken me for his brother.

Someday, I’ll have to see if I can get the three of us together. That’s all I know for now, but maybe we really are related!

After twelve years, our 1997 Chevy Venture decided that it had had enough. The repairs to make it operational and safe were going to cost more than the national debt. So, given that, we decided it was time to say goodbye to our friend.

Since Roger was travelling that week, Jon and Carol started the process of looking for a replacement vehicle. But, since we weren’t really ready to trade as we had intended to get another year out of the van — we went looking for something that we could call “nearly new”.

What we ended up with was a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer. This Trailblazer is perfect for us in that it still has about a year left on the warranty, should be good in snow (4 wheel drive) and has a third row of seats for when we want to take the extended family on short trips.

With this trade-in, for the first time ever, all of our vehicles are now from this millennium!
